Both consumers and regulators are increasingly demanding cleaner, healthier food. This puts pressure on food producers to find novel ingredients that satisfy the high standards expected.

They need to find ingredients that can replace additives such as preservatives, emulsifiers and stabilisers, add valuable nutrients such as protein and fibre, are minimally processed and carry clean-label status, and have strong sustainability credentials.

Such clean-label, multifunctional and sustainable ingredients can be difficult to find. But NorthStar Protein is on a mission to produce precisely such ingredients from rapeseed processing sidestreams.

Why rapeseed?

Rapeseed meal contains 30-40% high-quality protein, along with plenty of fibre, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals.

Rapeseed meal is the solid byproduct of oil extraction from rapeseed. It contains 30-40% high-quality protein with a nutritionally excellent amino acid profile. It also has about 10% fibre and about 5% healthy fats.

NorthStar Proteins’ flagship product, RapaPro, is produced from rapeseed meal and offers multiple benefits to food producers: It naturally extends shelf life, it is minimally processed and clean-label, it is gluten-free, and it adds valuable protein and fibre to food. It also has excellent sustainability and circular economy credentials.

All of this makes RapaPro a high-value, multifunctional ingredient.

Our innovation

At NorthStar Proteins, we use cutting-edge science to develop processing techniques that unlock rapeseed protein for human consumption.

Building on our deep expertise in biochemistry and biotechnology, we develop gentle, natural processing technologies for the production of clean-label ingredients for the food industry.

Our focus initially will be on ingredients for bread, cereals and snacks. Using RapaPro in these products will benefits both food producers and consumers by making them cleaner and healthier.

Our first target customers will be bakeries with a focus on clean-label, high-protein, high-fibre products.
